Carma’s Cookery – The Show! Episode 9: Jump Start Reboot Day 4

Carma Goes on Manuel Villacorta’s Jump Start Reboot from Whole Body Reboot

Jumpstart Reboot Green Day 4 Ingredients“If you eat too quickly, your body will push you to keep eating, and you can overeat. When people eat too fast, they never feel satisfied. Take your time when eating and savor the flavors of your nourishing food.”
~ Manuel Villacorta

Today I present day four of a 5-day detox from Manuel Villacorta’s book Whole Body Reboot: The Peruvian Super Foods Diet to Detoxify, Energize, and Supercharge Fat Loss. The reboot is organized by the colors of the rainbow. Monday was Red, Tuesday was Orange, Wednesday was Yellow, and today is Green.

The superfood in today’s smoothie is avocado. According to WebMD, avocados offer nearly 20 vitamins and minerals in every serving. In addition, they are low in surgar and contain fiber, which can help you feel fuller longer. In fact, “In one study, people who added a fresh avocado half to their lunch were less interested in eating during the next three hours.”

Although avocados are high in fat, it is a healthy fat, which can help lower bad cholesterol, as long as you consume them in moderation.

Note, also according to WebMD, if you have an allergy latex, you should talk to your doctor before adding avocado to your diet. “People with a serious allergy to latex may also experience symptoms after eating avocado.”

Avocados are native to Mexico and Central America and, although they have a nutty flavor are actually botanically berries.

Carma’s Cookery – The Show! Episode 8: Jump Start Reboot Day 3

Carma Goes on Manuel Villacorta’s Jump Start Reboot from Whole Body Reboot

ingredients“In Peru, people take two hours on average for lunch. In the United States, we typically take five to ten minutes. I understand that not everyone has two hours during a workday. Nevertheless, we can take at least twenty minutes to sit down, chew our food, and be present in the act of eating.”
~ Manuel Villacorta

Today I present day three of a 5-day detox from Manuel Villacorta’s book Whole Body Reboot: The Peruvian Super Foods Diet to Detoxify, Energize, and Supercharge Fat Loss. The reboot is organized by the colors of the rainbow. Monday was Red, Tuesday was Orange, and today is Yellow.

The superfoods in today’s smoothie are chia seeds and pichuberries (also called golden berries). I was unable to purchase fresh pichuberries, but I did find some dried ones.

In the video, I forgot to mention or add the protein, which is a very important component of the beverage. But never fear, I remembered once the camera was off and blended it right in!

Today’s spice was tumeric. One of my previous guests on Carma’s Cookery shared some really good information about the health benefits of this spice. You can find that episode here.

Carma’s Cookery – The Show! Episode 7: Jump Start Reboot Day 2

Carma Goes on Manuel Villacorta’s Jump Start Reboot from Whole Body Reboot

ingredients1“Eating should be a time of relaxation, awareness and mindfulness.”
~ Manuel Villacorta

Yesterday, I posted the first video in this five-part series of Carma’s Cookery vodcasts. Monday was the first day of a 5-day detox from Manuel Villacorta’s book Whole Body Reboot: The Peruvian Super Foods Diet to Detoxify, Energize, and Supercharge Fat Loss. The reboot is organized by the colors of the rainbow. Yesterday was Red and today is Orange.

The dominant superfood in today’s smoothie is the papaya. I grew up eating this fruit with a bit of lemon juice squeezed in. To make this smoothie taste good, you need to make sure that your papaya is ripe and sweet.

To prepare, cut it in half. Then use a spoon to scoop out the seeds. The flesh should be tender, but still slightly firm. This is a good color for a papaya:

Taste Test: Goat Milk Caramels

goat-milk-caramelsWhat happens if you love caramel chews but discover that you can’t digest cow’s milk? A typical recipe for soft caramel chews includes milk, cream or both.

Well, since many people who can’t consume cow’s milk without discomfort can consume goat’s milk just fine, Goat Milk Stuff may have a solution for you. The family owned business, which has been marketing natural goat milk soaps and lotions around the USA and world, has now entered the food market with a line of Caramel Candy made with farm-fresh goat milk.

Product Overview:

  • Cow’s dairy free
  • Gluten free
  • Farm made
  • Individually wrapped
  • Three available flavors: Chocolate, Cinnamon and Sea Salt
  • Available in an assortment of package sizes: 10-pack for $10, organza sack of 100 pieces for $90 and the 20-Piece Caramel Candy Gift Box for $27.

Overall Thoughts
Before writing this post, I wanted to make sure that the product was good, so I asked for samples. I received some Cinnamon and Sea Salt samples a couple days ago and I have to say they are da bomb!

Now, for context, I need to tell you that I’m not much of a caramel fan. I find most caramels to be far too sweet for my tastes, plus many are so tough you spend all your time chewing and chewing. I have a bad jaw, so I don’t like that either.

However, these Goat Milk Caramels from Goat Milk Stuff are soft and practically melt in your mouth. They are not overly sweet, either. There is a freshness to their taste that reminds me of the salt-water taffy you can get freshly made in Bodega Bay (or your local fair). The Sea Salt variety is good, but the Cinnamon is fantastic. The subtle tones of cinnamon balance out the sweetness of the caramel very nicely. I’ve never thought of melding those two flavors before, but I will now!

Product Background
Jonas_familyThe line of Goat Milk Caramels are made by PJ and Jim Jonas and their 8 children (8 to 18) on the family’s Indiana farm.

“As our first entry into food products, the Caramel Candy reflects our family’s continuing commitment to offer natural products of the highest quality,” says PJ Jonas, founder of Goat Milk Stuff. “Our pasture-fed Alpine goats provide milk rich in vitamin A and gives Goat Milk Stuff Carmel Candy a rich, creamy, delightfully chewy extra-tasty melt-in-your-mouth homemade-deliciousness that is perfect for family enjoyment or to give as holiday gifts.” In addition, “Our Caramel Candy is made with healthy organic ingredients and does not contain any genetically-modified additives or GMOs.”

PJ and Jim homeschool their children, and use Goat Milk Stuff as a teaching tool as the children develop an understanding of how business works. From daughter Brett, at 18, to sisters Jade and Indigo, 8 and 9, and with boys Colter, Emery, Fletcher, Greyden and Hewitt between them, all help mom and dad as they do daily chores and get real-world business experience to complement their homeschooling subjects from math and science to history, literature, Bible study and more.

Based in Scottsburg, Indiana, the Jonas family maintains an active social media presence with a growing following at www.Facebook.com/GoatMilkStuff, YouTube.com/GoatMilkStuff and at Twitter.com/GoatMilkStuff. You can purchase their caramels and other products at www.GoatMilkStuff.com.

You Really Are What You Eat

prairie dog eating broccoli - unbalanced diet?

Are you eating an unbalaced diet? If you can incorporate superfoods, you can right that balance easily!

Recent dietary research has uncovered 14 different nutrient-dense foods that time and again promote good overall health. Coined “superfoods,” they tend to have fewer calories, higher levels of vitamins and minerals, and many disease-fighting antioxidants.

Beans (legumes), berries (especially blueberries), broccoli, green tea, nuts (especially walnuts), oranges, pumpkin, salmon, soy, spinach, tomatoes, turkey, whole grains and oats, and yogurt can all help stop and even reverse diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and some forms of cancer. And where one might have an effect on a certain part of the body, it can also affect the health of other body functions and performance, since the whole body is connected.

With these 14 foods as the base of a balanced, solid diet, weight loss gimmicks and other fly-by-night programs can become a thing of the past in your life.

Conversely, the ill-effects of an unbalanced diet are several and varied. Low energy levels, mood swings, tired all the time, weight change and being uncomfortable with your body are just a few signs that your diet is unbalanced. An unbalanced diet can cause problems with maintenance of body tissues, growth and development, brain and nervous system function, as well as problems with bone and muscle systems.

Symptoms of malnutrition include lack of energy, irritability, a weakened immune system leading to frequent colds or allergies, and mineral depletion that can trigger a variety of health concerns including anemia.

And since the body is interconnected, realizing that an unhealthy body will result in an unhealthy spirit only makes sense. When we nourish our body with these superfoods and complement them with other nutrient-dense and healthy fresh foods, our spirit will be vitalized and healthy as a direct result.

Many modern diets based on prepackaged convenience foods are sorely lacking in many vitamins and minerals, which can affect our mental capacities as well, and cause irritability, confusion, and the feeling of ‘being in a fog’ all the time.

Superfoods can be the basis of a sound, healthy, nutritious solution to curing many of these ailments and more.
