Product Review: Caesar’s Frozen Foods

This review of Caesar’s frozen Italian meals is a bit late … I actually received and tasted these pasta dishes over seven years ago, but their flavor lingers on. In fact, I can safely say that their potato gnocchi is the best I’ve ever tasted and I’ve looked for them ever since. Turns out that although this product is available at dozens of store chains, it is not available at the stores I shop at.

Caesar's Frozen Italian Food

I was provided a sample of six different frozen Italian meals. This is what I remember:

[one_half]

Caesar’s Vegetable Lasagna and Cheese Lasagna

These frozen lasagna products were tasty, but I still like Stouffer’s better. Perhaps I just like meat lasagna the best and both of these were vegetarian. These are both gluten- and wheat-free, however, they are just as thick and plump as normal lasagna noodles. [/one_half]

Caesar’s Manicotti with Cheese and Marinara Sauce

I’m not a big fan of manicotti, but these were quite tasty. They had a little too much tomato sauce for my tastes. Again, I really didn’t notice that they were gluten- and wheat-free. [/four_fifth_last]

Caesar’s Potato and Spinach Gnocchi

I can still taste how awesome this gnocchi was. They were very potato-y, which I really liked. It was almost like eating potatoes themselves. These products can be found at stores in my area and might well be worth a special trip just to buy them. [/one_third]

Caesar’s Stuffed Shells

Again, I’m not much of a fan of stuffed shells and marinara, so this item fell flat for me. [/four_fifth]

Recommendation

If you are looking for a tasty gluten- and/or wheat-free option, these pop-them-in-the-microwave options are a good buy. They are tasty and truly Italian in flavor. You can learn more, as well as find stores near you that sell them, at their website, caesarspasta.com.

Cookbook Review: “The Al Tiramisu Restaurant Cookbook” by Luigi Diotaiuti

This collection of more than 100 recipes comes from the Al Tiramisu Restaurant in the heart of Washington, DC. This award-winning restaurant is thought of like “taking a trip to Italy without leaving the country.” Part cookbook, part Italian cooking primer and part memoir, this book offers you a slice of Chef Luigi Diotaiuti’s life and a taste of his birthplace in Italy.

Summary of The Al Tiramisu Restaurant Cookbook

The chapters follow a logical progression through Diotaiuti’s professional and personal life. Within each chapter, recipes are organized by Appetizers (Antipasti), First Courses (Primi), Second Courses (Second), Sides and Salads (Contorni e Insalate) and Desserts (Dolci). Tips for Italian cooking and wine suggestions follow every recipe. Preceding each recipe is an introduction from Diotaiuti sharing his personal thoughts on the recipe. There are plenty of full-color photographs of the recipes and from Diotaiuti’ life.

What Worked for Me

This book uses a nice big font, which makes it, easier to read while preparing a dish. Diotaiuti’s notes for each recipe are fun and interesting to read. The Italian Cooking Primers at the end of each recipe help explain techniques and give you alternatives for ingredients. At the back of the book there is a “Where to Buy” guide and a glossary of terms.

What Didn’t Work for Me

If I had been editing the book, I would have recommended that all the memoir parts be placed at the beginning and have the recipes organized together at the end. Having all five categories of recipe repeated through out makes the book less perusable for recipes. Yes, you can use the index, but that only works when you know what you’re looking for.

What I’d Love to See in the Second Edition

Although the content is good, the printing and design don’t live up to it. I would love to see a second edition that added a little more finesse to the design and used a better printer.

Recommendation

If you enjoy cooking authentic Italian cuisine, this book will make a good addition to your collection.

Cookbook Review: The Italian Diabetes Cookbook

italian diabetes cookbookWith all the pasta that Italian cuisine is famous for, you’d think it would be the last type of cuisine recommended for folks with diabetes. But, according to author, chef and Mediterranean expert Amy Riolo, the core of classic Italian cooking is preparing fresh ingredients, such as vegetables, whole grains, legumes, poultry, seafood and more, with time-honored techniques that preserve flavor, as well as tradition.

When diagnosed with diabetes, people are often extolled to eat more fresh foods and less processed ones. Riolo’s book, The Italian Diabetes Cookbook: Delicious and Healthful Dishes from Venice to Sicily and Beyond, presents a collection Italian recipes that are also easy-to-prepare and diabetes-friendly.

NOTE: I received a free copy of this book for review, however I am under no obligation to write about it positively or otherwise.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Over the past couple of years, I’ve experienced an increased interest in the topic of diabetic-friendly cooking. Not only have a married a wonderful man who has Type 2 Diabetes, but I’ve discovered that I’m pre-diabetic (which is, thankfully, reversible through diet and exercise!). This is the third in a series of reviews of books on this topic.

Summary of The Italian Diabetes Cookbook

This cookbook includes a collection of 150 authentic and naturally healthy recipes from Riolo’s Italian homeland. There are recipes for all occasions and several have vegetarian and gluten-free options. In addition, there is are suggestions for seasonal menus, a short primer on how to cook Italian, a guide to what one would need for an Italian pantry, and an Italian Culinary Glossary. There is even a guide on where to find ingredients if you can’t find them in your local store.

What Worked for Me

The book is consistently laid out with ingredients on the left and instructions on the right, which makes it easy to use. Most, if not all, the recipes include a note about “Italian Living Tradition” and a wine pairing suggestion. The information about exchanges and other nutritional data is also nice. This is a utilitarian book with few pictures … which is what a cooks cookbook should be.

What Didn’t Work for Me

Many of the pages have a watermark image for design, which can make the recipes a tiny bit harder to read. But everything is still legible. The different chapters are not easily distinguishable from the rest of the book, so flipping to the area you’re looking for is not easy. You’ll have to look up the section in the Table of Contents or recipe in the Index and then find the correct page.

Recommendation

If you love fresh Italian food, this cookbook will do the trick — providing you with healthy options without all the high-glycemic index pasta. This is not a meat and potatoes lover’s cookbook, but many of the recipes might just turn that carb-loving diabetic in your home around to better eating options.
