Pumpkin Season 2017: Taste the Variety

It’s that time of year again … time for all things flavored pumpkin! Now, this is a flavor after my own heart since I am currently working on an expanded version of my pumpkin cookbook, A Passion for Pumpkins. Inspired by a random video my husband and I found on YouTube, I’ve decided to do a tasting of many of new (and traditional) pumpkin and pumpkin spice flavored foods that are currently on the market.

So, I’ve gone on a pumpkin binge, purchasing a sampling of a wide variety of pumpkin and pumpkin spice flavored products available at your local grocery store, Trader Joe’s and restaurants. Over the next several weeks, I’ll be sharing with you my experiences and my opinions of these various offerings. (And no, I will not be tasting the dog biscuits!)

Pumpkin Season Taste the Variety

Before I even came up with this idea, I had already sampled several pumpkin inspired offerings. Here are my thoughts on each of them. In this post, you’ll find my thoughts on the following pumpkin flavor products:

  • Pumpkin Cups Candy
  • Chobani Greek Yogurt Flip, Pumpkin Harvest Crisp
  • Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Life Cereal
  • Pilgrim Joe’s Pumpkin Ice Cream Super Premium
  • Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Cheerios
  • Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins

Pumpkin Cups Candy

I saw these while in line at the 99 Cents Store, so I grabbed a bag. They kind of look like peanut butter cups, but have pumpkin flavored candy where the peanut butter would be.

The flavor was more sugar than pumpkin and way too sweet for my tastes. I did not purchase any more, which is why I don’t have a photo for you.

I think they are clever idea poorly executed. If I were to create pumpkin cups candy, the candy would be much more pumpkin-y and I think I’d dip them in dark chocolate, rather than milk chocolate.

Chobani Greek Yogurt Flip, Pumpkin Harvest Crisp

Chobani Greek Yogurt Flip, Pumpkin Harvest CrispChobani Greek Yogurt makes a line of “Flip” packages that are yogurt in one cup and crunchy items in another that flip over into the yogurt when ready to eat. Their Pumpkin Harvest Crisp features pumpkin low-fat yogurt with pie crust pieces, pecans, and glazed pumpkin seeds.

The pumpkin yogurt is, in my opinion, da bomb! The crunchy bits had texture, which is fine, but I would totally purchase this yogurt without them. The yogurt achieves a nice balance of smooth pumpkin flavor with a touch of pumpkin spice blend. I love eating this with my lunch.

Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Life Cereal

Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Life CerealMany of the fall flavors available are “pumpkin spice,” which means they use the flavor blend that is commonly used in pumpkin pie. This blend usually consists of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and either cloves, allspice or mace (which are very similar in flavor). Cinnamon is usually the dominant flavor, but not always.

In the case of Life Cereal’s Pumpkin Spice version, the cloves’ bite is quite prominent. I tried it sans milk, so the bite was strong. I believe that if you ate this cereal in milk (or the milk alternative of your choice — I’ve been favoring Oat Milk lately), this spiciness would be very nice.

That said, if the strong flavor of cloves is not your thing, I’d leave this item on the shelf.

Pilgrim Joe’s Pumpkin Ice Cream Super Premium

Pilgrim Joe’s Pumpkin Ice Cream Super PremiumOne of the traditional fall stand-bys at Trader Joe’s is their pumpkin ice cream. This year is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to try it. It was well worth the wait.

The texture of the ice cream is as promised — super premium. It is smooth and creamy. The dominant flavor is pumpkin, but with strong notes of cinnamon and cloves. I’m looking forward to trying this ice cream out with some of the other pumpkin products I’ve purchased. Some of my ideas include:

  • Ice Cream Sandwiches: Take two pumpkin toaster waffles and fill with pumpkin ice cream.
  • Pumpkin Pancakes Supreme: Dollop some pumpkin ice cream on pumpkin pancakes instead of using maple syrup or whipped cream.
  • Cookie Dip: Dunk the pumpkin cookies in the pumpkin ice cream — a decadent treat!
  • Pumpkin Bread a la Mode: A scoop of pumpkin ice cream will go well with a nice warm slice of pumpkin bread.
  • Breakfast Dessert: Toss in some pumpkin Os cereal with the ice cream to add a bit of extra texture.

Even my husband, who is not as into pumpkin as I am, thought the ice cream was good.

Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Cheerios

Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice CheeriosI’ve had other flavored versions of Cheerios before, so I was confident that this cereal would at least be edible. But I think they did a really good job with this one. Although it is spicy, it has stronger notes of cinnamon than the Life cereal had. I think these would not only taste great with milk, but also mixed in with vanilla yogurt.

Will you like them? It all depends on whether you like Cheerios to begin with — their signature taste is quite present — and if you like cinnamon with a touch of cloves. If yes to both, this is a nice change of pace to your breakfast routine.

It will be interesting to compare and contrast these with Trader Joe’s Pumpkin O’s, which I will do in a future post.

Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins

Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Cream Cheese MuffinsI love a good pumpkin muffin and these did not disapoint. These muffins have a “cream cheese filling and a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds” for flavor and garnish.

The frosting has a perfect balance of cream cheese and sweetness. It is not too sweet like so many commercial cream cheese frostings are. The muffin is mildly spiced with an almost molasses-ginger flavor mixing in with the pumpkin.

As I took my first taste, I was reminded of a molasses coffee cake I tasted once when I was a child. I love molasses (and often would lick the cup clean after measuring into the molasses cookies I made), so that flavor note was unexpected but delightful.

Review: Pillsbury Pumpkin Caramel Delight

Pillsbury Pumpkin Caramel Delight mixI’ve had my eye on this mix for awhile. I never purchased it because I really didn’t have a reason to, other than curiosity. But, this weekend I found it on sale and curiosity won.

The instructions are easy to follow and the cake was simple to make and assemble.

Although you bake the cake in a 13 x 9 pan, because you cut the cake into thirds, you end up with a small layered cake that is approximately 4 x 9 in size.

The cake is just what I expected … a spice cake with a hint of pumpkin. The almonds and caramel drizzle make it look lovely … it is perfect for bringing to a pot luck.

The one down side is that the cream cheese frosting is so sweet, it tastes more like sugar than cream cheese. If you don’t have that much of a sweet tooth, it might be worth getting some cream cheese and beating it into one of the cream cheese pouches (the filling is separated into two pouches, making assembly almost a no-brainer!).

Review – Betty Crocker’s Pumpkin Spice Cookie Mix

Photo provided by Amazon.com
Photo provided by Amazon.com
Yesterday, I was shopping at Wal*Mart for some basic stuff and saw their holiday food stuff display. Betty Crocker’s Pumpkin Spice Cookie Mix caught my eye because of my overall love of things pumpkin. So I placed it in my cart and continued on with my shopping.

When I got home, I took out a cube of butter to let it soften. The mix only needs you to add three things: a softened cube of butter, a tiny bit of water and an egg.

The dough was a little sweeter than I prefer, but had a nice balance of pumpkin and spice flavors. Once reason I don’t normally use cookie mixes is because I can’t reduce the sugar and most are too sweet for me. I was afraid this might be the case upon tasting the dough.

I also did as the instructions said and stirred the ingredients together without the aid of an electric mixer. If you’ve softened the butter enough, this works just fine.

I tasted the cookies both fresh from the oven and after they were thoroughly cooled. Both were quite nice. They remind me of a cross between a snicker doodle and a molasses cookie with a hint of pumpkin. These are perfectly decent cookies. The edges are crispy and the centers are mildly soft. I love the crispy part!

The cookies are still a bit too sweet for my tastes, but they aren’t as sweet as other cookie mixes I’ve tried. The mix said, depending on the size of the cookie, it made up to 3 dozen cookies … I ended up with two baker’s dozen plus one. Once the butter was softened … I left it on the kitchen table for about an hour … preparation takes about 15-20 minutes.

If you want something different for your cookie jar this holiday season, I recommend you try out Betty Crocker’s Pumpkin Spice Cookie Mix.

Simple Pleasures Are the Best

Carma eating a pumpkin pecan pancakeI never shopped at Fresh & Easy until I moved to Long Beach. And then only because it was the closest grocery store. And I’m sorry it turned out that way because I’ve had a “Where have you been all my life?” experience since I started shopping there.

First, the one I go to is tiny, but it still stocks an amazing array of gourmet and unusual items. Case in point, they sell creme fraiche! I’ve never seen that in a store before!

Anyway, awhile back I tried their Greek Style Yogurt and am now hooked. I’ve tried other brands and was unimpressed, but the Fresh & Easy brand is so smooth and creamy and has just the right balance of sweetness and tartness. I eat the Honey flavor like it was ice cream … slowly, savoring every delectable moment.

I bring this up because this morning I tried another of their store brand products, Pumpkin Pecan Pancake and Waffle Mix (that’s me chomping on one in the picture above). Unlike me, I decided to follow the instructions to the letter, including melting butter instead of using oil.

The pancakes were just this side of sweet … enough that I didn’t need maple syrup at all, but not so much as to make it taste like a cake or cookie. The spice was light … I couldn’t identify one or the other, like I can with so many other pumpkin flavored mix products. The balance of the pumpkin with the spice with the pecans was deftly done, leaving me with an overall “autumn” flavor, nothing overpowering the other.

I was pleasantly surprised. This is two store brand products that have wowed me … I’m going to have to try some more!

Review: Alta Dena Pumpkin Spice Eggnog

On a recent excursion to the grocery store, I found this little gem: Alta Dena Pumpkin Spice Eggnog. Alta Dena Dairy just released this new flavor, which combines the flavors of eggnog and pumpkin pie. I had to try it.

At first, I didn’t really taste the difference beyond a ginger-cinnamon taste replacing the common nutmeg taste of traditional eggnog.

But, after due diligence in tasting this product for you (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it), I found that it was different and quite good.

The eggnog is a slight orange color, probably due, in part to the pumpkin puree listed in the ingredients. At first, it tastes like traditional eggnog, but then the ginger and cinnamon tones take over. The after-taste leaves a vaguely pumpkin-pie remembrance on the palate.

For those of you that love eggnog as much as you love pumpkin, this will be a nice treat. And, like traditional eggnog, I suspect it tastes good warmed with a little nip of brandy or spice rum mixed in.

To celebrate my blessing of this new product, I provide you with this recipe based on it.

Pumpkin Spice Eggnog Pound Cake

1 pkg yellow cake mix
1 pkg instant pumpkin pudding mix
1/4 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1 1/4 cup Alta Dena Pumpkin Spice Eggnog
4 eggs
1 egg yolk
1/2 cup butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Grease two loaf pans with butter-flavored vegetable shortening. Dust sides with flour. Set aside.

In a large bowl, place the ingredients in this order: cake mix, pudding mix, ginger, cinnamon, pumpkin puree, eggnog, eggs, egg yolk, and melted butter. Using an electric mixer set on medium, blend the ingredients for 30 seconds. Put the electric mixer on high and beat for four more minutes. The batter should be smooth and creamy.

Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake for 45-55 minutes, until a toothpick or cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool in pan on wire cooling rack for 10 minutes. Invert cake onto another wire cooling rack and let cool thoroughly.
