Get Your Kids to Eat Vegetables

One of the biggest challenges for any parents is to get their kids to eat vegetables. Any parent (or aunt like myself) can empathize with trying to convince, cajole, or downright force their child to eat at least one vegetable. But are we going about things the wrong way? While we can certainly agree that it’s never easy to introduce vegetables to our kids, especially if we’ve been trying for a long time, here are a few things to consider to make it a more palatable experience.

Focus on Texture

If your children do not like the way a vegetable feels, can you change the texture? Nowadays you can use one of the many top roasting pans to change the texture in the oven. When you start to crisp up carrots in the oven, rather than boiling them into mush, this could make all of the difference.

You can also change the texture by mixing different vegetables together. My mother got me to eat spinach by mixing it with rice and got me to eat carrots by mashing them into potatoes. These became two of my favorite childhood comfort foods!

Get Your Kids to Eat Vegetables by Making them “Interactive”

Vegetables don’t just have to be something lying on a plate. You can change how they work with meals. Something like vegetables dipped in hummus or salsa can completely change the flavor and make eating them fun.

Reconsider Your Flavorings

Seasoning vegetables is a crucial part of how you make them attractive. Think about dishes that are vegetable-based, but are covered in delicious butter and herbs. There are plenty of Italian dishes that use vegetables as the main ingredient but are drizzled in olive oil, seasonings, and butter. If you are concerned about butter being too high in fats or being unhealthy, it’s vital to remember that you should not fear the fat anymore.

Get Your Kids to Eat Vegetables by Turning them Into a Sauce

If your children really don’t get along with textures, one of the best ways is to cheat by blending vegetables into a fine sauce that can go with pasta. It is a big battle, but this is one of the best ways to get over the hurdle. You can always add vegetables into dishes that are already firm family favorites, such as tacos or spaghetti. A spaghetti bolognese with a pasta sauce made from a variety of vegetables but still tastes like tomato sauce is a very easy way to get more healthiness into your children’s lives.

Think About the Experience for the Kids

If your children just come to the dinner table and don’t like to look at the food, they aren’t going to appreciate it, so your children could help prepare it. If your children are more involved, they are more willing to sample their creations. When you prepare meals for your kids, they are not going to have that same appreciation.

Keep Trying to Get Your Kids to Eat Vegetables

While you may think family mealtimes struggle when your kids don’t eat any vegetables, and this can greatly override any sense of enjoyment, you must remember that it is not a short battle but can be a long war. Even if your kids are not eating vegetables now, you may worry about it, however, if they are healthier in other parts of their lives, you’ve got to look at it in the grand scheme of things.

Convert Your Kids To Healthy Eating: 5 Easy Steps

Kids love sweets, chocolates and fizzy drinks. In fact, sometimes they might seem slightly addicted to sugar. If your child is eating sugary or fatty foods on a daily basis, you will need to cut this down, as it can be detrimental to their health. At first, they won’t be too keen to swap their beloved sweet treats for healthy snacks. However, they will soon come around to the idea. Especially if you use these handy tricks.

Keep Healthy Food Visible and Close

Kids will want to eat nearby things that they can see. So it is a good idea to keep fruit and vegetables on display. If your kids see something that they can eat, they’ll be tempted to try it no matter what it is. Conversely, if you do have sweets and cakes in your home, keep them hidden out of sight. If your kids don’t know they are there, they won’t ask for them.

Only Buy Healthy Snacks

The obvious answer to preventing your child from being tempted by sugary and fatty foods completely, is to stop buying them. Baking your own healthier snacks is a much better idea. And you can also swap all your bad snacks for fresh, healthy ones. Don’t worry if there is nothing you can do to get your kids to snack on fruit and veggies. Use Your Imagination

Kids usually love potatoes and pasta. These aren’t totally unhealthy, but they do have a fairly high-calorie count. Your kids can still enjoy them, though – you just have to be a bit sneaky about it. Instead of buying spaghetti and noodles, make your own from vegetables using a spiralizer. And instead of serving mashed potato, try cauliflower puree! The more inventive you are with your vegetables, the more kids will be intrigued by them and willing to give them a try. In fact my mother got me to eat carrots by mashing them into potatoes.

Swap Fizzy Soda for Fizzy Water

Kids love fizzy drinks. However, they usually have a very high sugar content. And that means they can cause weight gain and tooth decay. Not only that, but your kids will suffer from some serious sugar crashes if they drink a lot of fizzy drinks. One of the best drinks they can have is pure water. You can add some squash if they won’t drink it without a flavor. If they really miss their soda, give them fizzy water. Occasional Treats

Of course, kids can enjoy the occasional sugary treat or fatty snack. But this shouldn’t turn into a regular habit. A small chocolate bar or bag of chips once a week won’t do them any harm. Especially if they are living an active life with plenty of exercise.

Help your children get a great head start in life by promoting a healthy diet. They may not appreciate it now, but they will certainly thank you in years to come.

With obesity rising in the U.S. and P.E. being taken out of the schools, it has become critically important that parents encourage their children to eat healthfully and have an active lifestyle. In the third episode of Carma’s Cookery, I chat with Dr. Keith Kantor about nutrition for kids.

Dr. Kantor has been an advocate of natural food and healthy living for 27 years. In 1994 he was appointed CEO of Service Foods, Inc., the largest all natural food company of its kind in the United States. He has severa relevant degrees, include a Masters in Nutritional Science from Kaplan University (Summa Cum Laude), and both a Ph.D. in Nutritional Science and a Doctorate of Science degree in Naturopathic Medicine from Corllins University. He also holds undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry.

More recently, he authored the a family-friendly book for kids and their parents called The Green Box League of Nutritious Justice.

Recipes from the Video

Mandarin Orange & Spinach Salad
Prep time: 10 minutes

3 cups mandarin orange, fresh, peeled & sliced
10 mint leaves, fresh
5 cups baby spinach, fresh
1 large cucumber, peeled and chopped
1 red pepper, chopped
1 fennel bulb, chopped
2 Tbsp, extra virgin olive oil

Toss together and serve


Guacamole
Prep time: 10 minutes

3 ripe avocados
1/4 cup chopped red onion
1 bunch chopped, fresh, cilantro
1 chopped jalapeño
Juice from 1 lime
dash high quality salt

Combine with a spoon, fork or food processor depending on how chunky or smooth you want the texture. Serve with veggies, such as carrots or cucumbers.


Berry Spinach Smoothie
Prep time: 5 minutes

1-2 cups almond or coconut milk
1 cup frozen or fresh berries
1 handful of fresh or frozen spinach
1 Tbsp ground flax seed
4 oz plain yogurt

Combine in the blender. Blend on high, adding ice if needed. Serve.


Banana Dairy-Free Ice-cream
Prep time: 5 minutes

6 frozen bananas
1 cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk
1/2 cup walnuts

Blend and serve immediately. May be frozen to thicken it.
