How to Persuade Children to Try New Food

Kids are notoriously picky eaters. They’ll try to avoid any food that’s unfamiliar, whether it be a vegetable or an animal protein. How can you convince them to give something new a chance? Here are some excellent ways to persuade children to try new food.

How To Persuade Children To Try New Food

Be Calm When You Attempt to Persuade Children to Try New Things

If you get upset or angry about the fact that your children aren’t eating what you have given them, this will be quickly picked up by the children themselves, and then they will associate new foods with your disapproval. This can give them a mental block when it comes to trying new things, and they might not even realize it is happening. If you stay calm and ensure it is no big deal, it’s just something different on their plate, they’ll be less concerned with your feelings and more interested in the food itself. If they still don’t try it, don’t say anything. Just try again another time.

Fewer Snacks Can Help Persuade Children to Eat Better at Mealtimes

If you cut down on the number of snacks a child has, they will be hungry enough to try whatever is on their plate when it comes to mealtime. If they have had a snack long before, or they know they’ll get one later on when they ask, there is no incentive to eat what’s there – they’ll know they’ll never go hungry. Once they realize that there won’t be a snack later, they will try the new food (ideally), and hopefully, they will like it.

Don’t Make Them Eat It All

The point here is to encourage children to try new things rather than eat a lot of food, so you shouldn’t ask or expect them to eat everything you give them. Trying it is enough. Of course, if they do find that they like it, they may well eat it all, and if you have any in reserve, they might even have a second helping. Make a rule about food such as they have to try at least a bite of everything on their plate or they won’t get dessert. They know the rule, it’s not a big fuss, and they try new things easily.

Serve It In A Fun Way

Just putting some items on a plate and placing it in front of your child may not inspire their imagination too much – and the food, even if it tastes great, could come across as rather dull. To make them more likely to want to eat what you want them to eat, give them something to think about and to remember. This might be their favorite food with a special sauce, so finding the best mild sauce for chicken is a good idea. You could look at a home taco bar and put all the ingredients out on the table for the kids to build their own tacos with, for example. Or what about making your own pizzas from scratch? There are many ways to make food more interesting, which will help kids want to try new things.

Convert Your Kids To Healthy Eating: 5 Easy Steps

Kids love sweets, chocolates and fizzy drinks. In fact, sometimes they might seem slightly addicted to sugar. If your child is eating sugary or fatty foods on a daily basis, you will need to cut this down, as it can be detrimental to their health. At first, they won’t be too keen to swap their beloved sweet treats for healthy snacks. However, they will soon come around to the idea. Especially if you use these handy tricks.

Keep Healthy Food Visible and Close

Kids will want to eat nearby things that they can see. So it is a good idea to keep fruit and vegetables on display. If your kids see something that they can eat, they’ll be tempted to try it no matter what it is. Conversely, if you do have sweets and cakes in your home, keep them hidden out of sight. If your kids don’t know they are there, they won’t ask for them.

Only Buy Healthy Snacks

The obvious answer to preventing your child from being tempted by sugary and fatty foods completely, is to stop buying them. Baking your own healthier snacks is a much better idea. And you can also swap all your bad snacks for fresh, healthy ones. Don’t worry if there is nothing you can do to get your kids to snack on fruit and veggies. Just buy more nuts, baked treats, and cereal bars. You can order yummy snacks online here.

Use Your Imagination

Kids usually love potatoes and pasta. These aren’t totally unhealthy, but they do have a fairly high-calorie count. Your kids can still enjoy them, though – you just have to be a bit sneaky about it. Instead of buying spaghetti and noodles, make your own from vegetables using a spiralizer. And instead of serving mashed potato, try cauliflower puree! The more inventive you are with your vegetables, the more kids will be intrigued by them and willing to give them a try. In fact my mother got me to eat carrots by mashing them into potatoes.

Swap Fizzy Soda for Fizzy Water

Kids love fizzy drinks. However, they usually have a very high sugar content. And that means they can cause weight gain and tooth decay. Not only that, but your kids will suffer from some serious sugar crashes if they drink a lot of fizzy drinks. One of the best drinks they can have is pure water. You can add some squash if they won’t drink it without a flavor. If they really miss their soda, give them fizzy water. To get more vitamins into their system, mix them up a smoothie using a NutriBullet.

Occasional Treats

Of course, kids can enjoy the occasional sugary treat or fatty snack. But this shouldn’t turn into a regular habit. A small chocolate bar or bag of chips once a week won’t do them any harm. Especially if they are living an active life with plenty of exercise.

Help your children get a great head start in life by promoting a healthy diet. They may not appreciate it now, but they will certainly thank you in years to come.

Popcorn? In a salad?

Over the Labour Day weekend, I got to meet my in-laws-to-be for the first time. We all met at my fianceé’s mother’s house for a salad potluck. Given my love of salads — my favorite restaurant is Sweet Tomatoes/Soup Plantation — I was delighted by the array of salad choices and made sure to have a little bit of each one.

Some were better suited to my palate than others, but for me the stand out salad of the day was — get this — Popcorn Salad.

I would never have thought of putting popcorn in a salad, and, frankly, I didn’t even recognize that as an ingredient until I tasted it. I asked my mother-in-law-to-be for the recipe.

If I had seen this recipe before I tasted it, I would have left out a couple of ingredients. I’m not a big fan of celery and I might have tried to find a substitute for the mayo. But it was so good, I knew I had to share this with you as it was presented to me.

I think it could be your next hit — with kids and adults alike — when it comes time to bring something to the buffet again.

Check it out here.

So now put on your creative thinking caps: How could you use this basic recipe to come up with something uniquely your own? Here are some ideas that came to the top of my mind:

  • Use cheddar popcorn instead of plain
  • Toss in some ranch dressing mix
  • Add Craisins for color and a touch of sweetness
  • Increase the chives or add in chopped green onions
  • Add in 1/4 cup shredded purple cabbage for flavor and color
